Zeolites are a class of mineral formed by the chemical reaction of volcanic ash with seawater.
They have a three-dimensional crystalline structure that looks like a honeycomb (or cage) and
are one of the few negatively-charged minerals in nature. This charge and structure is what
enables them to attract and trap toxins. Natural zeolite has GRAS (generally recognized as safe) status with the Food and Drug Administration and is safe for everyday use.
